The Character is an expanding series of drawings, paintings, sculptures, performances, and videos about one nebulous image called the Character. The work documents the developing gesture lexicon of the Character, as it grows larger, learns to move its new body, and explores the space that contains it. Building on questions of desire by W.J.T. Mitchell and responding to early criticism of Photography from William Benjamin, Susan Sontag, and Roland Barthes, The Character wonders how an image might misbehave and curiously pushes on human longing and fear for "image aliveness."
